We are seeking to raise $15,000 to successfully put on high quality pride week events, cover access-related costs such as ASL interpretive services, transportation needs, and accessible food options, bring in guest speakers to facilitate sessions on a broad range of LGBTQ-related topics, and create print and digital posters, banners, and lawn signs to raise awareness about University of Albertaâs Pride Week. This campaign will assist us in planning a pride event for all UofA and Edmonton community members to come together to increase LGBTQ visibility and create support networks on campus and around Edmonton.
Hey, guys. We really need your help. With less than a week left of fundraising, University of Alberta Pride Week is less than 60% of the way to our goal. We need the funding to pay for advertising, events, guest speakers, and to keep Pride Week accessible with things like gluten-free and vegan food options, ASL and CART (closed captioning) services, and wheelchair-accessible venues.
Please consider sharing this, reading my story, and donating if you can.
I have been struggling with my identity since junior high. Even with the average age of coming out getting lower and lower, being twelve and facing the prejudice and bullying that coming out (or even worse, being outed) was rough. Things started to look up once I escaped my junior high, and entered high school, once I found my school’s GSA. However, my three years with the club ended way too fast, and I found myself entering university lost and lonely once again. UAlberta does have a queer social group, but I was still scared to be myself everywhere else on campus, and come out to my new peers and professors. Old anxieties and issues started resurfacing; I just didn’t know where I could feel safe.
When I found out about Pride Week, I was overjoyed.
I didn’t have to be invisible anymore. Pride was visible all over campus, and the awesome events got everyone involved and excited – not just the queer students and staff. The unbelievable support and confidence that Pride Week shows makes campus a safe and welcoming place, and presents a strong reminder that intolerance and prejudice is absolutely unacceptable.
Without donations, Pride Week wouldn’t be able to reach such a wide audience, provide the support it does, or celebrate acceptance on campus. Please reblog, retweet (#ualbertapride), share, and donate!
This is a great cause. If you have a few minutes, please reblog!
